Radial Shockwave Therapy

Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy in Burlington

At Walker’s Health & Performance in Burlington, we’re excited to offer Radial Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment proven to accelerate healing and relieve chronic pain. Ideal for stubborn tendon conditions like Golfers or Tennis Elbow, calcific conditions like tendinitis, and other stubborn soft tissue or large muscle injuries.

How Shockwave works:

Improves Blood Flow and Healing:  Each session creates small micro-trauma that triggers your body to form new blood vessels and kickstart the healing process.  It also cause blood vessels to dilate or widen.  This improves blood flow and circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the area for faster healing.

Strengthens Tendons and Ligaments: It encourages your body to produce new, organized collagen which is an important building component of tissues like tendons and ligaments.  This helps create stronger and more resilient tendons and joints

Relieves Pain: The therapy reduces certain pain-related chemicals and calms irritated nerves, which can lead to fast and noticeable pain relief especially immediately after treatment.

Breaks Down Calcium Buildup:  Calcific tendinitis is a common injury of the shoulder and can be very painful.  Shockwave helps break up calcium deposits along tendons and near the rotator cuff that cause pain and stiffness.

Improves Large Muscle Trigger Points:  Large muscle groups like the quads, glutes and calves can have stubborn tightness and trigger points causing pain and affecting function.  The mechanical effect of shockwave creates relief and can be a beneficial addition to any treatment plan.

What to Expect with Treatment

Radial Shockwave Therapy is generally very safe and well-tolerated, with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience temporary redness, mild swelling, or soreness in the treated area.

While the therapy is designed to promote healing and recovery from stubborn or chronic injuries, it's normal to feel some initial discomfort or soreness, which typically subsides within a few days or gradually over the course of treatment.A minimum of 4 sessions is recommended to provide the most benefit from the beneficial effects of shockwave.

Shockwave can be administered as a stand alone treatment or for best results, will be combined with acupuncture, soft tissue mobilization and exercise.

The therapy is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have blood clotting disorders, infections, tumors, or are on blood-thinning medications. A thorough history is always taken prior to beginning treatment.
